The Art of Balancing: Harmonizing Passions and Responsibilities

3–4 minutes

By our consultant Ellen Peeters – senior functional & business analyst

In a world full of endless possibilities and responsibilities, it can be challenging to pursue your passions while leading a busy life. As a functional analyst, mother of two young children, member of a show choir and student Psychology, I am learning the importance of finding a balance between these different aspects of my life. Here, I share my journey and the lessons I’ve learned about combining multiple passions and responsibilities. But also, that skills learned or used in specific domains can be very useful in others.

Functional Analyst: Structure and Problem-Solving

In my role as a functional analyst, my focus is on translating complex business needs into practical IT solutions. This work requires analytical thinking, precision, and strong problem-solving skills. It keeps me sharp and allows me to make a meaningful impact within the company. The structure and logical thinking required for this role provide a valuable foundation in my daily life.

Show choir: Harmony, Teamwork, Movement and Expression

Beyond my work, I am a proud member of a show choir – where we combine singing and dancing. This activity takes me into a world of melody and harmony, where teamwork is essential. Singing in a choir teaches me to listen, collaborate, and know when to bring my voice forward or hold back. It’s a beautiful outlet that helps me relax and nourishes my creative side. Dancing is another passion that holds a special place in my life. It offers a way to physically express my emotions and energy. It’s the perfect way to step away from daily concerns and get my body moving. The possibility to combine these is just a dream coming true for me.

Being a Mother: Love and Responsibility

Being a mother is undoubtedly one of the most demanding and fulfilling roles I play. It requires patience, flexibility, and unconditional commitment. This role teaches me daily about love, responsibility, and prioritization. It’s a constant source of joy and inspiration, and motherhood reminds me of what is truly important in life.

Studying: Growth and Development

In addition to all these roles, I decided a year ago to start studying Psychology out of interest. Studying requires discipline and time management, but it also offers immense satisfaction and opportunities for personal growth. My goal so far is to first finish the Bachelor programme and take it step by step.

Finding the Balance

Balancing these various passions and responsibilities is certainly not always easy. It requires good planning, prioritization, and sometimes making tough choices. One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is the importance of self-care, setting boundaries and good communication. By managing my time effectively and setting realistic goals, I can fulfill my various roles without feeling overwhelmed. I’ve also learned to be flexible and to give myself permission not to be perfect all the time. It’s crucial to recognize that each phase of life brings different demands and opportunities and that it’s okay to shift focus as circumstances change. Finally, an important remark, is that in order to find this balance, it is also necessary that your employer pays attention to the needs and passions of their employees. I can only thank Privatum because they continuously stimulate and encourage my passions, by checking in on my well-being, providing support for trainings and even coming to watch my shows.

Conclusion

Combining my work as a functional analyst, my passions for choir singing and dancing, my role as a mother, and my academic ambitions has been a challenging but incredibly rewarding journey. This diversity of activities enriches my life and helps me become a more balanced and fulfilled person. I am grateful for the opportunity to follow my passions while meeting my responsibilities. I hope my story inspires others to pursue their own passions and find a balance that works for them. Ultimately, it’s about living according to what brings us the most joy and fulfillment. #Balance #Passion #FunctionalAnalyst #Motherhood #ShowChoir #LifelongLearning #Privatum
